We believe in giving back to the community and as home brewers and beer geeks we realize the opportunity we have had in being able to realize our dream. Therefore, we want to share the chance of brewing a batch in a professional environment with others who may have similar aspirations. We also want to split the profits from sale of the first winning batch on our system between the winner, NC Brewers Guild, and other charities. We realize it’s a small step forward towards furthering the state of craft beer; but we hope a step in the right direction…

Winning brew from last Brew it Forward

The winning brew from last Brew It Forward created by Kevin Cosentino will be available in March to sample during the upcoming Brew It Forward.

To clarify certain points

Per the feedback we have received, we would like to clarify a couple of points:

  1. The $6 per entry that we will collect will be used to organize a small event on the day of the award ceremony, and will be used towards food and such for the participating brewers
  2. We keep none of the profits from the first batch brewed for sale. 1/3 goes to the winning entry, 1/3 will be given to NC Brewer’s Guild, and finally 1/3 will be given to charities

Give me the short and sweet version

We highly recommend reading details below, as rules and regulations cannot be summarized. But for the casual reader, here is a condensed version of Brew It Forward:

  1. Competition aims to promote the craft of home brewing in NC
  2. Number of entries limited to 200 total. And 4 per entrant
  3. Please read details for rules and regulations
  4. Registration Begins: January 23rd
  5. Registration Ends: March 20th
  6. REGISTER BY CLICKING HERE
  7. Award Ceremony: March 27th
  8. Judging will be done on: March 27th. Though March 27th award ceremony will be open to public, RSVP will be required RSVP BY CLICKING HERE
  9. Festival is open to NC Amateur Brewers
  10. The winnings (net profits from sale of first batch, after recovering our costs) will be equally divided between the winning entry, NC Brewer’s Guild, and Charities
  11. We sincerely hope you participate

About the Competition

The Best of Show winning beer of this competition will be brewed, under the homebrewer’s strict supervision, at our brewery and sold commercially by Lonerider at the brewery. The Lonerider “Brew it Forward” competition is a sanctioned BJCP competition, and there are some restrictions that apply to the entered beer and applicant, as described in the following paragraphs. We look forward to tasting your entry!!

Who can enter?

The Lonerider “Brew it Forward” competition is open to all amateur homebrewers, 21 years of age or older. Registration is restricted to residents of North Carolina only, which is Lonerider’s distribution area. Please, no professional brewers or Lonerider employees and their immediate family members.
If multiple brewers produced any of the brews to be entered, a separate registration must be made for each unique set of brewers. The registration must include contact data for at least one of the brewers. Additionally, completing the Brewer’s Team Name field on the registration form is mandatory if there was more than one person who participated in producing the brew. For multiple brewers, the flight awards and BOS prize will be presented to the named team, not the point of contact or the members of the team. For the single brewer case, the point of contact and brewer are the same and the Brewer’s Team Name field will be ignored.

What about the beer?

Any beer can be entered in this competition, as long as it meets the criteria described in this section:

  1. Lonerider must be able to brew your beer (grain to glass) in no more than four weeks.
  2. Lonerider is limited to Wyeast Laboratories’ professional beer yeast strains as described in:http://www.wyeastlab.com/com_b_yeaststrain.cfm. Wild yeast, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, bacteria, etc. cannot be used.   (Lactic acid may be used).  Homebrewers should pick yeast that very closely matches the allowed professions yeast.
  3. Hops are limited to pellet form, but there are no restrictions on hop variety. If a certain hop variety is not available at the time the winning beer is brewed at Lonerider, then the homebrewer must pick a substitute hop variety.
  4. There are no restrictions on malt. However, home smoked/toasted/roasted malts are not permitted.
  5. Spices and flavorings are permitted. Aging on wood chips is permitted, but barrel-aging is not.
  6. Entries must be brewed at home from start to finish on a non-professional, homebrewing system.  Beer brewed in a commercial brewery or a brew-on-premises facility (BOP) is not allowed.  Fresh malt extract from a brewery isnotacceptable.
  7. Dry or liquid extract intended for homebrewing is acceptable.
  8. The alcohol cap is 8% ABV.
  9. A single-temperature infusion mash must be used.
  10. Beer must be able to be reproduced in a large quantity. Homebrewers should keep meticulous notes.
  11. Beer entries falling outside these restrictions or otherwise not suitable for production at Lonerider Brewing Company may be disqualified and the entry fee promptly returned.  The actual beers will not be returned.
  12. Each entry must be delivered with its completed recipe form.  The link for the recipe form is available here.  Entries without a recipe cannot be selected as the BOS winner.

The fine print:

The Lonerider “Brew it Forward” competition is a “most drinkable beer” competition, and as such, entries will not be judged according to BJCP guidelines. However, entries will be evaluated, by a panel of BJCP-trained beer judges and industry professionals, based on drinkability and the absence of brewing, fermentation, and handling flaws. BJCP score sheets will be returned to entrants after the competition. Lonerider reserves the right to organize the entries into groups, at its discretion, for evaluation and awards.
Lonerider Brewing Company, will take the Best of Show winning recipe and reproduce, as faithful as possible to the original recipe, on a professional scale with the help of the homebrewer. By entering the contest the winning homebrewer agrees to disclose their complete recipe to Lonerider Brewing Company and grant Lonerider Brewing Company all commercial and intellectual property rights to the winning beer. The winning homebrewer may also elect to grant permission to Lonerider Brewing Company and its agencies to use their name, likeness, picture, signature, voice, audio and video recordings and biographical information in any manner or media whatsoever (whether now known or hereafter devised) anywhere in the world in perpetuity for the purpose of advertising and trade, without further compensation, unless prohibited by law.
All entries, associated recipes, and payment in full must be received by the date specified below. This deadline applies to every entrant, without exceptions. Late deliveries will not be returned. This procedure will allow us to conclude the competition in one day and better assure quality control.
Registration will be limited to the first 200 entries. Once this limit is achieved, registration will be cut off and no further entries will be accepted.

How much will it set me back?

The fee is $6 for each entry.  Each brewer is permitted to submit a maximum of 4 entries into the competition.

What’s in it for me?

The registration fees for this competition will be used exclusively to cover the cost of producing the Lonerider “Brew it Forward” competition. In addition to the opportunity to brew their winning recipe on Lonerider’s professional system, a portion of the net proceeds from the sale of the beer made by Lonerider Brewing Company using the winner’s recipe will be given to the winning homebrewer. Any remaining funds will be donated to the NC Brewers’ Guild and other charities by Lonerider Brewing Company. Quality ribbons will be awarded to all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place flight winners.

What kind of bottles are eligible?

Each bottle must be plain glass, brown or green, 10 to 16 ounces in volume, and crown capped. Bottles and caps must be free of anything which is sufficiently unique that it could identify a brewer. This may include raised lettering, labels, unique bottle shapes or the like. No swing-top bottles. Bottle caps should have any distinguishing marks completely blacked out. The use of brown, long-neck, 12 oz. bottles is encouraged, but not required. Bottles not meeting these guidelines will be disqualified, and ineligible for award. However, they may be judged at the discretion of the competition organizer. NOTE: Reusable containers, including “Carbonator” type devices can not be returned. We will be unable to return bottles or shipping materials.

How do I enter?

  1. Prepare 2 bottles of each of your beers.
  2. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. We require all entries to be completed on-line. Print and cut-out the 2 bottle labels per entry. Also complete the recipe form.
  3. Attach a bottle label to each bottle with a rubber band. Do not use glue or tape. It is advisable to enclose each label in a plastic (sandwich) bag to avoid smearing in the event of broken bottles during transit.
  4. Write a check payable to Lonerider Brewing Company for the total of your entries. $6 for each entry. Check with FedEx or other private carrier if you prefer to ship. Checks shipped with brews should be enclosed in a plastic bag to eliminate smearing. Mailed checks are acceptable. Please ensure that the check identifies the entrant/point of contact. Also see MikeDixon for a JudgeNet posting on shipping advice.
  5. Send or deliver entries, checks and recipes as noted above.
